Professors Mika Niemelä (Helsinki), Aki Laakso (Helsinki), Ali F. Krisht (Little Rock, AR, USA), Rokuya Tanikawa (Sapporo, Japan), Luca Regli (Zurich, Switzerland), Peter Vajkoczy (Berlin, Germany) and Michael T. Lawton (Phoenix, AZ, USA) along with senior, junior and nursing staff will demonstrate and discuss different approaches and microsurgical techniques in live operations in various intracranial lesions (aneurysms, AVMs, cavernomas, extrinsic and intrinsic brain tumors). Helsinki Neurosurgery has close to 3500 surgical and endovascular procedures annually. More information about the department on www.hus.fi/neurosurgery. During the course there will be 6-8 operations per day, i.e. 25-30 operations altogether in three ORs. Professors will discuss the cases and present microsurgical videos between and after the operations. The understanding of the human brain passes several levels of analysis, from anatomical dissection to philosophical questioning, histological analysis to psychological theories, artistic representation of its anatomical structures to modern neuroimaging. It is imperative that basic and clinical neuroscientists, neurosurgeons and neuroradiologists master the knowledge of the architectural complexity of the human brain, above all, of the white matter network. Following the first successful edition in June 2018, this workshop offers a heuristic and holistic approach of utilising the participants’ previous knowledge of the human brain and adding special emphasis on the understanding of neuroanatomical relationships in neurosurgical and neuroimaging perspectives. » more

Unser Kurs wird für alle Kolleginnen und Kollegen hilfreich sein, die mit Hilfe eines Mikroskops oder einer Lupenbrille Operationen durchführen möchten. Im ersten Teil warden die Basiskenntnisse der Mikrogefäßanastomose vermittelt und an Präparaten geübt, die erworbenen Erkenntnisse werden dann im zweiten Schritt unter realitätsnahen Bedingungen angewandt. Zudem vermitteln einige kurze Vorträge die klinische Relevanz der erlernten Techniken. Das Konzept des Kurses ist auf eine praxisnahe Vorbereitung ausgerichtet, so dass die Kollegen, die später mit einer Lupenbrille arbeiten werden, diese bei den Übungen tragen sollten, während alternativ auch Operationsmikroskope gestellt werden. » more

This course is designed for neurosurgeons and otolaryngologists at senior trainee and consultant levels who are interested in the most recent developments in endoscopic surgery of the cranial base and pituitary gland. This comprehensive two day course, limited to 11 delegates for 6 hands-on stations, is a presentation of minimally invasive endoscopic techniques for the anterior skull base and pituitary fossa. Experts on the subject will present the anatomical, pathophysiological and technical aspects of surgery along with risks, benefits, complications such as CSF leak and outcomes. Also endocrinology,neuro-radiology and anaesthetic aspects of endoscopic anterior skull base surgery will be covered. Teaching is through hands-on cadaveric dissection with a 1:2 faculty to delegate ratio and lecture / video presentations including 3D anatomy of the paranasal sinus and skull base. Simulation stations will also be available throughout the course, which provides more opportunity for hands–on practice. The Care of the Critically Ill Neurosurgical Patient course will be taking place at the B. Braun Medical Business Centre, Sheffield on Thursday 25th and at the Royal Hallamshire Hospital, Sheffield on Friday 26th July 2019. The importance of managing critically ill patients in a neurosurgical unit cannot be over emphasised. The responsibility of looking after these patients and recognising any change in their clinical state is primarily left in the hands of the junior doctors or ANPs on the wards. This course is aimed at ANPs and junior neurosurgical trainees (FY2-ST3) who are not only involved in the care of neurosurgical patients, but at the same time, with progression in career, would be asked for advice by more junior foundation trainees or hospital nurse practitioners Once received we will send your application to the organising committee for approval. We would like to invite you to the 2019 annual meeting of the British Neurosurgical Research Group (BNRG),which will be jointly hosted by the Academic Committee of the SBNS and The Department of Clinical Neurosciences, Edinburgh. The BNRG are a group of clinicians, scientists, nurses and health-care professionals who are interested in all aspects of neurosurgical research. The BNRG has historically been a forum for the presentation and discussion of ‘in-progress’ investigations and new study concepts. This year we have amended the date of the meeting so trainees wishing to apply for fellowships can present their proposed studies for discussion and feedback. We will also be including a trials update session and a sandpit session designed to discuss and prioritise pre-determined future research proposals.
